This a long one, you might want to grab a cuppa …
Can you believe it’s been 22 years this Saturday since we opened our door ?
I am so grateful for this salon and my team – past and present – and you of course, for being our client and supporting our dream.
The Powder Room has stayed a stoic landmark of Birstall as many changes have unfolded over the years.
It used to be Verity’s Greengrocers many moons ago and the shop we knocked though to expand was Sue Ryder charity shop.
I’m sure you may remember other shops before us too, I would love to hear your stories of Birstall.
We have seen many shops coming and going, the new market place with its famous cobbled square, new parking changes, The phone box went, I think, I’m not actually sure what happened with that one in the market place.
Anyway, the things I love about Birstall include:
The poppy cloak that drapes the Joseph Priestley statue in November,
The Christmas lights that dazzle and sparkle as the people come together.
The Birstall in Bloom gang working their magic and the stripey market stalls trading their wares every Thursday.
The beautiful varied shops, there are too many to mention all of them but you will have to explore and pay them a visit yourself.
Another thing I remember from when we first opened, is the smell of bread coming from Bishops and the colourful display outside the paper shop that felt like we were at the seaside because of the buckets and spades and toys hung outside.
It really is a lovely little town.
Our fellow shopkeepers are all striving to keep their businesses afloat as the economy and government likes to play with us like a ragdoll. We all help each other out and its a great vibe to be honest. Its not easy, but it is worthwhile and I personally love being a part of it.
There are many community groups that bring people together and make space for conversation and connection too. With all the cafes and the art studio, plus the new Tea Room has all sorts going on.
The library and community centre have many things for people to join in with and feel part of something. Which is so important, now more than ever !
We have a lot of clients who especially after Covid, felt isolated and lonely so these places are a godsend to help with that.
We have hosted events and walks to help people get out in nature and make new friends. With all the online automation its important to keep the old ways too and face to face interaction is timeless.
It’s everything I wanted from this little shop!
We have never just been your average beauty salon.
We have created a hub where people feel safe to talk and let go of their troubles.
We have always had the ethos of making you feel good on the inside and loving yourself more, rather than worrying about external beauty.
You just glow differently when you’re happy and we facilitate that.
We aim to reduce your stress levels from the moment you walk in and let you relax and recharge your batteries whichever treatment you choose.
Fun Fact : The population of Birstall is almost 17 thousand residents.
That’s a lot of people supporting our local small businesses both online and bricks and mortar.
Its so important that we all stick together and keep the town thriving and we really couldn’t do it with out you.
So Thank you for your loyalty and support, it really does mean the world to us.
P.S. We are not having a party this year. I plan to wait until we reach our 25th anniversary to have a big bash !
